FAQ

ASCII, explained.

Why does the table start at 32 instead of 0?
Codes 0–31 are non-printable control characters (like tab, line feed and escape) left over from teleprinter days. They don't display as a visible glyph, so this reference sticks to the 95 printable characters, 32 (space) through 126 (~).
What's the difference between ASCII and Unicode/UTF-8?
ASCII only covers these 128 codes (0–127), enough for basic English. Unicode (commonly encoded as UTF-8) extends this to every writing system and emoji in use — see it in action on the Binary Translator’s UTF-8 mode.
How do I look up a character's hex value quickly?
Find the character in this table for an instant lookup, or type it into the Hex Translator for a live, multi-character conversion.
